Information: Stephen presents this fascinating lecture examining Glasgow's mercantile past from 1660 onwards and illustrating the links with tobacco, slavery, the abolition movement and the city's urban environment. The direct and indirect connections with slavery will be highlighted, in addition to the later local campaigns for abolition. The talk provides an intriguing account of the role of slavery in Glasgow's history, one which has been largely unacknowledged until recent times. There will be an opportunity to see the fascinating exhibition on Glasgow's links with Slavery in St. Andrew's in the Square.
