A FREE weekend in Glasgow.... Doors Open Day 2010!

 

The Built Heritage Festival celebrates Glasgow’s buildings, streets, rivers, allotments and parks.  The event has evolved over 21 years and is packed with things to see and do.  In September, from Tuesday 14th to Friday 17th there are talks, events and seminars.  On the weekend of Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th more than100 buildings will be open with FREE entry! There are also Heritage Trails and Guided walks, bus tours and a River Clyde boat trip "Doon the Watter" All for FREE!

So, look through the brochure (available in early August) and decide how to make the most of the Festival and your city! 
Entry is free to the buildings and most of the events  – a few might ask for a donation. 
Some things, especially the walks, will be in great demand so please check to see if you have to book in advance.

Just a few of the highlights:

  • Buildings including the historic Fairfield Shipyard Offices – the finest of their kind in Britain
  • 'Open Gates' - for the first time 11 allotments across the city will be open at the weekend
  • Guided walks (The Necropolis, Maryhill, Glasgow Green, Dennistoun, George Square, West End Tenements, Tollcross Park, Partick and many more)
  • The Briggait, now transformed into a vibrant new home for over 80 visual artists and cultural organisations will be open
  • Glasgow Museums Resource Centre at Nitshill are opening for the weekend and offering guided tours of their vaults, a drop in course on research and an event for childrenWillow Tearooms Salon de Luxe
  • Organ Recitals at selected venues
  • The Grand Central Hotel, restored to its former glory, will be opening and is a "must see"
  • Bus Tours including the Community Planning Partnership South West Area tour
  • Boat trip for 200 people on the River Clyde by the Clyde Waterfront Partnership
  • Launch of the Landmarks Initiative at St Andrew's in the Square on Friday 17th
  • The unveiling of "The Glasgow House". An exciting initiative by GHA and City Building to build enery efficient homes for the future
